Our History

       St. George Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Paterson, New Jersey, was previously known as ‘Garfield Mission’. On May 1, 2004, the ‘Garfield Mission’ was formed at Our Lady of Sorrows Church after merging two mass centers-New Milford and Dumont. Fr. Joy Alapatt was appointed as the first mission director and served with great leadership for almost a decade!In September 2011, he was transferred to Chicago and Fr. Paul Kottakal was appointed as the director of the Garfield mission. After 2 years of leadership, Fr. Paul Kottakal was transferred to Oklahoma City on November 30th 2013 and Fr. Jacob Christy Parambukattil was appointed as the director.The community had a desire to grow and pursue its dreams of acquiring a church of its own.

     After several strenuous attempts, with Fr. Jacob Christy’s leadership, a suitable church was found and purchased it on October 31st, 2014. Within 50 days of hard work, the community re-constructed and prepared the church for celebrating the Holy Qurbana.On December 21st 2014, the church was consecrated by His Excellency, Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath and the longtime dream of the community came true. Fr. Jacob Christy was appointed as the first vicar of the parish. Now every year the community host several events and activities for all age groups: kids, youth, young adults and the older generation. Today, the parish is flourishing with more than 220 families.
